Cleaning of a Pillow Tank

Q&A: Is it possible to clean a portable pillow tank?

Question: How can I clean a portable pillow tank after I use it for several months?grey water tanks

Answer: Good question. The cleaning process of the portable pillow tanks is depending on the liquid you are storing. Fabrics for these tanks are often chosen based specifically on the liquid you are looking to store so cleaning may require a slightly different product or option.

Oil and Hydrocarbons Storage If you store oil, we have good experiences in using a mild degreaser or detergent to clean these tanks.

Water Storage In the case that you are storing water, chlorine can be used as a sanitizing agent for these units. We recommend no more than 5% solution. An alternative means of sanitization is with an industry approved sterilizing agent.

Please note that tanks are typically equipped with fabrics suitable for either drinking water, non-potable water, or fuel and hydrocarbons. Because a tank of often built specifically for one type of storage, it is not recommended that a drinking water tank be cleaned and later used for fuel.

Pillow Tank Construction

As a general overview, the pillow tank is made in a couple of different fabrics including a commercial, medium duty and industrial grade material. Fabrics will feature a different material thickness as well as contact time. Options for contact times include the following:

  • 1 year contact time
  • 3-5 year contact time
  • 7 year contact time

The contact time is generally rated as the amount of time your fabric can store these liquids before material in the tank may start to change. It is not designed to act as a lifespan for the tank, but rather a time frame for when fabrics may start changing.
