Rainwater Storage Tank Information

rainwater storage pillowThere are many different reasons for storing and collecting rainwater. While many people intend to reuse collected water for utilities or sprinkler systems, others have also created filtration systems that allow the water to be reused for drinking purposes. For this reason, tanks can be made with either a non-potable water or potable water fabric. Potable water fabrics will have additional properties that allow them to meet NSF 61 and FDA requirements for safe drinking water storage.

How it Works

One of the most common ways to use this tank for rainwater collection is by connecting the tank directly to a downspout. As water is gravity fed off the roof or down the gutter, it will connect to a hose that feeds your tank with water. Each tank features two fittings:

  1. Bulkhead Fitting located on the top of the tank for fill/discharge
  2. Bulkhead Fitting located on the side of the tank for fill/discharge

The hose from your downspout will connect to one of these fittings, while a hose for pumping water out of the tank can be connected to the other fitting. Filters may be attached to the top portion of the system to help filter out water and prevent items from clogging up the system.

Technical Specifications

Fabric: Fabrics used for rain water storage tanks can be made with a couple of different fabrics depending on the intended use of the water stored inside the tank. The standard fabrics used are polyurethane, polymer alloy, and E PVC coated materials. For reuse in spraying, washing or utilities, a standard water grade fabric will be used. If you will be using the rainwater for drinking water purposes, tanks will then be built with an NSF 61 and FDA rated fabric that can safely store potable water.

Contact Time: The contact time for your specific rain water storage tank can range depending on the material used for your tank. Contact times can vary between 1 and 7 years. It should be noted, however, that the contact times are not an indication of functionally, but rather a point in times where the fabric on your tank may start to change due to weathering or chemical process. This has no bearing on the longevity of a tank.

Fittings: Standard fittings on the tanks will feature a 2" fill and drain fitting, with options from 3/4" to 3" and 4" to 6" also available.

Optional Fittings

Packaging: The packaging of these rain water storage tanks is largely decided based on the intended use and mobility requirements of your tank. We offer a variety of solutions based on your application including carry bags, totes, wooden treated crates, or as specified (additional costs may apply for unique packaging).

To help ensure the longevity and lifespan of your tank, ground cloths, berms, or rub pads can be placed underneath the tank to add additional abrasion resistance and ground protection.

cistern liners

Have a rainwater storage tank that is leaking? Check out our Cistern Liners. Made from the same reliable fabric as these storage units, liners are available in custom sizes to match these dimensions and storage requirements of your existing tank.
